NTMA-U is an innovative online education program that bridges the gap between tradition degree programs and skills based certification curricula. 

Through agreements with participating colleges, students can take courses online and earn credits toward an associate degree, as well as gain the knowledge to complete their NIMS written exam while building valuable industry-specific knowledge. The curriculum is customized and tailored to the needs of NTMA members, with textbooks and online trading guidelines that have been developed by the association members specifically for this program. Upon successful completion of 6 semesters, students receive 21 Articulated College Credits to the University of Akron’s Mechanical Engineering Technology Bachelor’s Degree. 

How the employer benefits:

  • Employer sets the salary for the NTMA-U Apprentice enrolled in the program
  • No additional time or financial commitment for the employer
  • No Federal intervention or oversight
  • Student progress reports to the employer

How the student benefits:

  • No cost to the student if employed by an NTMA member for NTMA-U modules, these modules and the completion of an NTMA Member company apprenticeship can be used to obtain 21 articulated college credits to the University of Akron’s Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technology degree. The credits are transferable upon successful program completion to any California College/University towards a Bachelor’s degree for a similar degree discipline. The balance of The University of Akron degree is available to be completely achieved on-line at “In State” tuition.
  • Should student choose to finish Mechanical Engineering Technology degree at University of Akron, student pays in-state tuition.
  • All classes are online and self-paced.
  • The completed degree is transferable
  • Six semesters of online program allows you to learn and earn without student loan debt.

How you can qualify:

  • Employer must be a NTMA member in good standing

  • Student must remain an employee of the NTMA member for 4 years and complete a Precision Machining Apprenticeship with an NTMA Member company, or series of NTMA Member companies. 

You are not required to participate in the credentialed program to take advantage of the online classes. You can register employees for a specific class topic, such as “Safety Training” which would help to satisfy OSHA safety training requirements.
